The Road to Cinema Podcast highlights the new Sony Pictures Classics release “Grandma.” You will hear actors Lily Tomlin and Sam Elliott and writer/director Paul Weitz as they discuss their collaboration for the new comedy which premiered last January at the Sundance Film Festival. Tomlin plays misanthrope, recluse writer Elle Reid whose granddaughter Sage surprises Elle one morning with the news that she’s pregnant. The duo stumble through the day trying to find money for Sage’s abortion while confronting Sage’s smarmy ex-boyfriend (Nat Wolff), Elle’s heartbroken former lover (Sam Elliott), and Sage’s high strung workaholic mother (Oscar winner Marcia Gay Harden).
Watch the trailer for “Grandma” opening in theaters on August 21st in New York and Los Angeles and many more cities in the weeks to come!
Following the press conference, we’ll present Road to Cinema’s one on one interview with writer/director Paul Weitz. Paul and his brother Chris were the team behind the first installment of the “American Pie” franchise. The brothers also wrote and directed two of my personal favorites; “About a Boy” starring Hugh Grant, adapted from the Nick Hornby novel, and “In Good Company” starring Dennis Quaid, Topher Grace, and Scarlett Johansson.
Paul and I discuss his writing process, how Lily Tomlin’s voice became an inspiration for the character of Elle in “Grandma”, and Paul’s process as a director; shooting “Grandama” in 19 days with a streamlined budget and crew.
