This week’s episode of The Road to Cinema Podcast features a conversation with Oscar nominated director Brett Morgen of the new documentary “Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck” which is now available in the United States on all HBO platforms. Morgen achieved tremendous results with the “The Kid Stays in the Picture”, “Chicago 10”, “June 17th, 1994”, and his Oscar nominated boxing documentary “On the Ropes.” Over seven years in the making, Morgen brings us an unprecedented inside look into the inner life of the beloved musician and artist Kurt Cobain. Cobain, the front-man for the chart topping band Nirvana, suffered a tragic death at the age of 27 which sent shock-waves around the globe. “Montage of Heck” explores the personal voice of a talented musician and artist who constantly struggled with insecurities and deep seeded addictions. Morgen gained access to Cobain’s never-before-seen personal archive which contained journals, artwork, sound collages, audio recordings, and home movies all of which are included in this film.
Cobain and Morgen are both rare artists who can take a structured format and twist it on its head for unique, out-of-the-box results. While most documentaries rely on talking head interviews cut together with b-roll footage, Morgen takes us into world of Cobain by primarily using the archive materials along with music, sound collage, and remarkable animation with Kurt’s voice and visuals of his journal entries guiding the audience through the trauma and astronomical success. The film also features moments of discussion with Kurt’s immediate family and Kurt’s former wife Courtney Love.
