Oscar nominated costume designer Deborah Landis at the opening of the Hollywood Costume Exhibit at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
This week on The Road to Cinema Podcast, we speak with Oscar nominated costume designer Deborah Landis. She is the curator behind the Hollywood Costume Exhibit currently on display at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. The exhibit began in London at the Victoria & Albert Museum in 2012 and then traveled around the world. In early October, the exhibit finally landed in Los Angeles thanks to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences as well as the exhibit’s curator Deborah Landis. The Hollywood Costume Exhibit will be open until March 2, 2015 and includes costumes from over 100 years of movie history ranging from Charlie Chaplin in “The Tramp” to Chris Evans in “Captain America: The Winter Soldier”.
This incredible multimedia exhibit opens with the “Deconstruction” section showing how a costume designer reads a script and develops a look for the character with the actor. The exhibit utilizes sophisticated projection displays showing screenplay pages featuring highlighted sections of where the costume designer drew inspiration to create the specific costume on view. The “Dialogue” section of the exhibit features video interviews between directors and costume designers. The interviews include: director Mike Nichols with costume designer Ann Roth, director Martin Scorsese with costume designer Sandy Powell, director Quentin Tarantino with costume designer Sharen Davis, and director Tim Burton with costume designer Colleen Atwood. This technological feast for the eyes features monitors displayed at two ends of a table with the costume drawings, from the movie being discussed, projected onto the table between the director and costume designer. It is unlike any multimedia display that I have ever seen in any museum. Take a look at some pictures from the front entrance of the Hollywood Costume Exhibit which features a long line of Oscars given to legendary costume designer Edith Head. When you enter the exhibit, an original music score and an atmospheric lighting design transport you into the world of movies.
We will also discuss Deborah Landis’ involvement creating the costume for Indiana Jones in “Raiders of the Lost Ark”. The Hollywood Costume Exhibit features the original Indiana Jones costume that was designed by Deborah Landis as well as original sketches of the costume from Landis and director Steven Spielberg.
