Tim Burton’s drawing inspired screenwriter Caroline Thompson’s script for “Edward Scissorhands”
“Edward Scissorhands” is directed by Tim Burton and based on Mr. Burton’s own hand drawn character sketch. However, turning that very drawing into a fleshed out narrative screenplay populated by dynamic characters in a one-of-a-kind world is credited to screenwriter Caroline Thompson. I had the incredible privilege to interview Ms. Thompson for the “Road to Cinema” YouTube series. Aside from the masterfully crafted “Edward Scissorhands”, she also contributed to the screenplay for another film in the Tim Burton universe “The Nightmare Before Christmas”.
Below is a clip from our interview with “Edward Scissorhands” screenwriter Caroline Thompson. She discusses her meeting with Tim Burton where Mr. Burton showed her the original “Edward Scissorhands” drawing. Ms. Thompson shares with us how many personal moments from her childhood ended up in her screenplay for this suburban “Frankenstein” esque fairy tale which starred Johnny Depp in a breakout role.
