This week I had the privilege to talk with producer Steve Nicolaides. Mr. Nicolaides has produced and line produced some of Rob Reiner’s most acclaimed films “The Princess Bride”, “Stand by Me”, “A Few Good Men”, “Misery”, and “When Harry Met Sally…”.
His proudest achievement is bringing to the screen a landmark film “Boyz ‘N The Hood” which chronicles a group of friends coming of age in South Central Los Angeles. Writer/Director John Singleton based a great deal of the film on his own experiences with family and friends as well as encountering racism and prejudice which is seen in the film from the most subtle to the most overt. John Singleton became the first black director to be nominated for an Oscar at the 1992 Academy Awards. He was also the youngest director ever to be nominated for “Best Director” surpassing Orson Welles on “Citizen Kane”. John Singleton also received an Oscar nomination for “Best Original Screenplay”.
Below you can watch a segment from our “Road to Cinema” interview where producer Steve Nicolaides shares with us how “Boyz ‘N The Hood” was brought to audiences around the world.
