After watching the amazing human portrait of film critic Roger Ebert in Steve James’ new documentary “Life Itself”, it peaked my interest in a couple of docs about filmmakers that I need to check out.
First, “Weekend of a Champion” an unfinished doc from 1971 that was recently finished and co-directed by Roman Polanski. Polanski makes an appearance in front of the camera as he follows world champion race car driver Jackie Stewart at the 1971 Monaco Grand Prix. Polanski friend and producer Brett Ratner was instrumental in bringing this lost doc to the forefront which premiered at last year’s Cannes Film Festival. Mr. Ratner is also producing Polanski’s new narrative film that should be in production sometime this year. “Weekend of a Champion” is currently available to rent on Amazon instant video, ITunes and other On Demand platforms.
Second, “Boyhood” and “Before Midnight” director Richard Linklater makes his way to the front of the camera in a documentary chronicling his friendship with filmmaker James Benning in “Double Play”. The two met in Austin, Texas in the mid 1980s and have maintained a friendship over almost 30 years. They both share insights on the filmmaking process and how their personal lives influenced their careers. Richard Linklater was a successful baseball player in high school but an injury putting him on the bench led him to a journey toward film. The doc was directed by Gabe Klinger and premiered at last year’s Venice Film Festival. Also available on Amazon instant video, Itunes and other On Demand platforms.
Haven’t seen the docs yet but hopefully soon. If you have seen either one, send a Tweet and share your thoughts! Check out the trailers below!
